Primary and Secondary Schools Rugby League has been firmly embedded in the South of England over the past half decade. In 2009 alone the region engaged over 33'000 schools participants in various forms of rugby league activity. Our primary schools Tag Rugby League delivery scheme focuses on introducing young players to the sport through core skill delivery and a modified version of the professional game. Many primary school players will then progress into School Sport Partnership festivals along with inter / intra school competitions. South London Community Rugby Leagues General Manager Giovanni Cinque commented on the success of the primary schools initiative in the South London region stating that: In 2009 there has been huge amounts of work from both South London staff and the three Croydon school sports partnerships which will have seen over 900 children from 75 schools competing in 15 family festivals. The secondary school program offers a more comprehensive introduction to Rugby League with the contact elements of the 13 a-side game being common practice. Outside of their available local schools league, all secondary schools have the option to enter into the Carnegie Champion Schools Competition (go to Champion Schools) and a chance to compete for the coveted national title. Both the primary and secondary schools delivery programs are supported by the Youth Sports Trust and the introduction of the National Competition Framework along with the more recent deployment of our region competition managers (read more: www.youthsporttrust.org/page/competition-framework).
