| Tag Festival continues to reap success |
70 pupils from 8 Brentwood Primary Schools competed in a tag rugby league festival this week, organised by Brentwood Elvers RLFC and the St Martins School Sports Partnership. The event was an opportunity for participants to develop core skills and knowledge of the game of rugby league in a series of drills and games, before converging on the astro-turf for a tag festival to finish the day.
Taking place for the 4th consecutive year, the day was led by the RFL’s League for All development team, alongside Elvers coach Phil Abbott. Following a demanding morning, the schools produced ever-increasing quality during the competition stages. Holly Trees and Mountnessing schools were pipped in the semi-finals leaving St Peters (South Weald) and Kelvedon Hatch to battle it out for the festival honours. The final was eventually decided late in the game when St Peters raced away to an unassailable 3-1 lead with only seconds left. Speaking of the day, Elvers coach Phil Abbott said, “The main objectives of the day were to increase participation and awareness in the game of rugby league. Some of the children involved today are really keen to continue playing the game, either through school or at the Elvers. Such events are key to our recruitment programme and are an indication as to why the mini’s section at the club is going from strength to strength” League for All Officer David McMeeken said, “It has been a great day of rugby league, the majority of participants had not even picked up a rugby ball in their lives and found themselves playing in match conditions hours later. The day was a real credit to the Brentwood community” Tag Rugby League is a fantastic game suitable for anyone, regardless of age, gender or skill level. It is a non contact sport and is primarily about running and passing, where agility speed and good hand eye co-ordination are more important than brute force or strength. The beauty of the game is that it encourages people from all sporting backgrounds to participate together in mixed social teams.
